Blue Eagles keep fingers crossed over Caf

Fisd Challenge Cup champions Blue Eagles are still waiting to get approval from management on Caf Confederations Cup participation.

Eagles expressed interest to take part in the continental second-tier club competition for the first time after winning the national Cup in December last year.

Eagles General Secretary, Williams Nkhoma, said management was yet to approve.

“We are keeping our fingers crossed that management will give us a go ahead. The budget was already submitted,” he said.

The Area 30-based club reportedly submitted a K45 million budget for the preliminary round of the competition.

Should Eagles management decides against participating in Caf, Malawi will have one team in the continental club championship.

One of the local coaches, Thom Mkolongo, said participating in Caf competitions would help the country.

“There are more positives participating in Caf tournaments although lack of funds is the main challenge. We need to encourage our teams to take part in such competitions,” he said.

Eagles have bolstered their squad with new players namely Chifuniro Mpinganjira, Mphatso Philimon, Lazarus Nyemera and Gaddie Chirwa after losing top strikers Schumacher Kuwali and Foster Biton to UD Songo of Mozambique and Silver Strikers, respectively.

Registration for the competition is expected to start in April but TNM Super League champions Nyasa Big Bullets have indicated that they will take part in the competition for the third straight year.

Last season, Bullets were knocked out of the competition by FC Platinum of Zimbabwe on 2-1 aggregate loss whereas Masters Security FC lost 3-0 on aggregate to Proline FC of Uganda.

In 2018, Bullets and Silver Strikers were the country’s representatives but both teams also exited in the preliminary round.

Bullets lost 4-3 to Gor Mahia of Kenya on post-match penalties whereas Silver also lost by the similar margin to AOC MS of Gabon. But Silver indicated that they would take part in the competition in 2021 as they build a strong squad.
