There was drama at Kamuzu International Airport (Kia) in Lilongwe, Saturday morning, as people ran for dear lives after a suspected hand grenade was spotted outside the main entrance to the airport.
Kia police spokesperson, Sapulani Chitonde, confirmed the incident Sunday.
Chitonde explained that the whole parking area was evacuated while those in the waving bay were told not to move as security tried to handle the situation.
Said Chitonde: “Young boys who wanted to go to the waving bay were searched and found with the said toy and were advised that they would not enter with it as it looked like a hand grenade. They returned with it and dropped it on the flowers near the car park.
“Later on some people saw it and reported to the police. Of course, tension was high as we treated it as live.”
But Chitonde said it was later established that the suspicious gadget was a mere toy.
“When the police were making arrangements to communicate with authorities, the police officer who searched the boys returned and informed his fellow officers that it was only a toy,” he said.
With terrorism reaching unprecedented levels, countries are prioritising aviation security with flights being forced to delay or land on suspicion of security threats.
