Bon Kalindo out on bail

Zomba Chief Resident Magistrate Mzondi Mvula Monday granted bail to Mulanje South legislator, Bon Kalindo, who is answering charges of disorderly conduct at a police station and insulting the President.

Kalindo was arrested in Lilongwe last week, days after visiting Balaka Police Station following the arrest of UTM president Saulos Chilima’s aides, who police claim behaved suspiciously at an event which President Peter Mutharika attended in Balaka last week.

Granting the bail, Mvula ordered Kalindo to pay K20,000 bail bond and present two sureties pegged at K100,000 non-cash.

Mvula also ordered Kalindo to surrender travel documents to the cour t and barred him from commenting on the case until judgement is delivered.

The court also ordered Kalindo not to meet any State witness before he enters plea on January 17 2019.

After the ruling, Kalindo’s sympathisers started chanting songs outside the court, praising God for his release.

Kalindo addressed the sympathisers, who were dressed in UTM attire, for nine minutes before proceeding to the city centre on a convoy, amid chanting by the fans.

Kalindo’s lawyer, Kondwani Kumitengo, said he did not appreciate the move to remand Kalindo over the weekend.

“I have not been happy that my client spent the weekend at Zomba Central Prison and I am not overwhelmed by today’s ruling,” Kumitengo said.

Chilima visited Kalindo at the prison on Sunday.
