Katoto Primary School learners have promised to work hard at school after Book Aid International (BAI) in conjunction with Malawi National Library donated various reading books to Katoto Primary School in Mzuzu City

Speaking at the function over the weekend, one of BAI’s representatives, Peter Changwera, said the organisation decided to donate the books to Katoto Primary School because the head teacher complained that the school had insufficient books in its library.

“Our organisation is conducting sensitisation campaigns in different primary schools in the Northern Region because we want people to become members of the National Library Services at a small fee of K5,000 only so that they can be eligible to receive books in their schools,” he said.

On his part, Katoto Primary School Head teacher, Donken Tembo, thanked the organisation for the donation, saying it had come at the right time because the learners were in need of good books in the library.

The donated books included novels, storytelling, drawing and brail.

“Our school is encouraging learners to work hard at school and have a culture of reading because, though reading, the learners will gain more knowledge and become vibrant in ideas,” Tembo said.

Tembo then advises the learners to take good care of the new school library and use the materials for the intended purpose by not vandalising the library and stealing the books.

He further appealed to other non-governmental organisations in education sector to emulate BAI’s example in a bid to ease challenges in primary schools.
