One of the country’s boxing prospects Israel Kam’mwamba is in police custody after assaulting three people on different occasions at his home in Sigerege, Chilomoni Township in Blantyre.

Kam’mwamba has spent over a week at Chilomoni Police and he is expected to appear in court this week. Details about his arrest were still sketchy but sources said the boxing community was planning to bail him out.

A boxer, who opted for anonymity, said Kam’mwamba was reported to the police after injuring some people within the community.

“Initially, he has three cases to answer because those are different incidents with different people. The victims reported the matter to the police separately,” he said.

The source feared Kam’mwamba’s behaviour could ruin his blossoming career.

“He is at the peak of his career and he is supposed to be exemplary. Maybe if it was a single incident it could have made sense but it happened on three occasions which shows that his behaviour is questionable,” the boxer said.

Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPCBC) president Lonzoe ‘Defector’ Zimba, said they were keenly following the issue.

“Let’s wait for his case then we will also take our action. As of now let us not speculate,” he said.

However, the body is mandated to revoke Kam’mwamba’s licence for putting the sport into disrepute.

Besao Boxing Promotions managing director, Bester Saopa, said Kam’mwamba should be counselled to avoid damaging his steadily improving career.

“He is still young and officials need to guide him to avoid ruining his career,” he said.

Kam’mwamba, 25, is one of the exciting boxers and has defeated the likes of Chrispin Moliyati and Osgood Kayuni.
