Bravehearts step up eSwatini preparations

Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) reigning champions, Bravehearts men’s and Bravehearts Ladies, have stepped up preparations for this year’s Kingdom eSwatini [formerly Swaziland ] Invitational Tournament slated for June 22-24 in Mbabane.

The two teams will, for the first time, take part in the tournament, having pulled out last year at the eleventh hour.

Bravehearts patron, Griffin Kalua, said the two teams have confirmed their participation in the tournament.

“Our preparations are on track and we are sure that we will do well. We are going there to compete and not as tourists. We have a very good track record when it comes to participating in international games and we want to maintain it,” Kalua, who also doubles as a coach for the men’s team, said.

Bravehearts men’s came closest to winning the 2018 Zambia Invitational Tournament when they finished as runners-up to giants Matero Magic.

Bravehearts Ladies official, Lusungu Banda, said preparations are progressing well ahead of the trip. The two teams are expected to leave for eSwatini on June 20.

Central Knights and Lady Dynamites are some of the local teams that expressed interest in taking part in the tournament.

But Knights Head of Marketing, Emmanuel Phiri, said the team has pulled out of the event as a cost-cutting measure.

“At t h e moment, we are focusing on building our basketball court. So we are not going to Swaziland. Hopefully, we will participate in the event next year,” Phiri said.

Dynamites could not be reached for comment.

For the past two seasons, Knights have been travelling to eSwatini for the competition with little success. Cougars also took part in last year’s tournament.
