Bravehearts tourney on today

Basketball’s top players and teams converge at the African Bible College in Lilongwe today for the 2022 Bravehearts International Invitational Tournament.

The competition returns after a two-year Covid break with 12 men’s and eight ladies’ teams.

Local basketball giants Bravehearts, Ark Angels and Central Knights are set to fight for honours against top teams from Zambia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The opening day men’s category fixtures involve Zambian sides Munali Suns and Matero Warriors against their Malawian opponents Knights and Bravehearts, respectively.

In the ladies category, Bravehearts Ladies face Alex Town Queens of Zambia.

Also in the competition are other Zambian sides Unza Honeys and Magic Sparks while City Towers are representing Zimbabwe.

Organiser Khuda Zvareva said all is set for the tournament.

“All participating teams are ready and we expect exciting basketball,” Zvareva said.

Other Malawian teams in the competition are Cougars, Crazy Warriors, Spartans and Kamuzu Barracks.

Bravehearts men’s coach Dominic Munyenyembe said his troops are geared for the tournament.

“The foreign teams do not instill fear into our minds. We are ready for them and we want to prove a point. We have gained enough experience and we believe it is possible to win this tournament,” Munyenyembe said.

Matero and Bravehearts Ladies are the competition’s defending champions in the men’s and ladies’ categories, respectively, having won the last edition in 2020.

CDH Investment Bank and Dika Construction Company have sponsored the tournament with undisclosed amounts.

Winning teams in either category will pocket $2,000 (about K2.9 million) each.
