Malawi Police Service has said it has no evidence for treason charges leveled against three Malawi Congress Party officials Jessie Kabwila, Peter Chakwantha and Ulemu Msungama.
MCP Executive Member Ulemu Msungama was arrested on Sunday while Publicity Secretary Kabwila on Monday and party youth leader Chakwantha on Tuesday. They have all been released on police bail.
Inspector General of Police Lexten Kachama told a news conference in Lilongwe on Wednesday that police have not formally charged the three because there is no evidence for treason but insisted that the police are still investigating to establish if the suspects have a case to answer.
Kachama also denied reports that the police were under pressure from government to make the arrests.
The police boss also trashed the fears that government may lose huge sums of money should the suspects sue government in turn for connecting them to treason but without evidence. Kachama said lives and property are more important than money.
