National middleweight champion, Brian Mwando, has opted for a local trainer to reduce costs ahead of his title defence against Yusuf Dealer.

The boxers will face off in a 12-round title contest at the newly-constructed Robin’s Park in Zomba on Sunday.

Mwando has hired local trainer Leonard Metazama after opting not to use Zimbabwean trainers.

“I think I have been in Malawi for some time and I have known the crop of different trainers that can help me. It is for this reason that I want to avoid incurring unnecessary costs. For the first time, I will work with a local trainer. I have settled for Chazama because he is experienced,” he said.

Mwando said he was set to defend the title having been training for three months.

“There is nobody who is going to snatch this title from me. I am sure my opponent won’t finish the rounds. The only time I will let anyone have this belt is when I am going to vacate it myself,” he said.

Dealer said he was ready for the showdown.

“I am very strong and I focus on my strength. I know I am going to surprise my opponent because he is underrating me. I have studied his style and he is not a boxer that can go beyond seven rounds. He gets exhausted easily,” he said.

In supporting fights, Yami Mtambo will take on Aubot Makaika whereas veteran Hajison Mkoka will face Pemphero Nkhoma. Lameck Sichinga will entertain Romeo Makwakwa. In the main supporting fight, Alex Lukande will date Collings Kazembe.
