Mwando started strongly in the first two rounds pinning down his opponent with combinations but he eventually wore off in the final rounds.

Mwankasope, who only had a week to prepare after replacing Kenyan boxer Misheck Mwanyembe, also had his moments and almost sent Mwando to the canvas in round six.

Meanwhile, Mwando, whose record against boxers from East Africa is impressive, said he was glad to make a winning return after being on ban for six months.

“I stayed for six months in the gym but I wasn’t sure if I was going to return. It was good to win but my performance wasn’t satisfying,” he said.

Mwando was slapped with an indefinite suspension after confronting Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) officials after ringside announcer declared Charles Misanjo as the winner of the contest.

The boxer paid K50,000 fine and also renewed his licence at K5,000.

In the main supporting fight, Henry Muyaya defeated John Mbenje on unanimous points.

Meanwhile, Alufandika Boxing Promotions, managing director, Robin Alufandika, said they would keep on promoting international fights to give local boxers a chance to gain exposure
