Bricks snatch MEET title from Magang’a

Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) giants Bricks executed revenge when they lifted the MEET bonanza after beating defending champions Magang’a 49-47 at Blantyre Youth Centre on Saturday.

It was a memorable game for Bricks who last year, lost in the finals to the same opponents.

In recent games, Bricks have been struggling against Magang’a but on Saturday they put up spirited performances with the likes of forwards Chikondi Mwendera, Weluzani Chingota, pointguard Chrispin Makaka and Adam Kara being the hub of the team.

But it was offguard Victor Jere, who scored 13 points including two-three pointers and some mesmerizing lay-ups to inspire Bricks to victory. Manne Bessy scored 10 points.

Magang’a forward Takondwa Jana, scored 13 points while offguard Hope Chisamanga, scored 10 points.

Bricks led the first quarter 15-12, second quarter 23-19 but trailed the third quarter 34-37.

In a third-place match, Cobbe beat Lox360 78-57.

In ladies section, Lady Hawks beat Kalibu Academy 27-8 to win emerge champions.

Malawi Environmental Endowment Trust (MEET) sponsored the tournament at K1 million after doubling the sponsorship.

MEET coordinator, Karen Price, said they sponsored the tournament to reach-out to the youth on the need to take care of the environment.

“The tournament was timely because it also came at a time when we are commemorating the theme of this year which is Seven Billion Dreams, One Planet Consume with Care,” she said.

Price hinted that they might return next year to bankroll a similar tournament.

Basketball Association of Malawi (Basmal) president, Raymond Banda, Sozobal chairperson Hamlet Kamtengeni and Malawi National Council of Sports board member Khrishna Achutan, hailed the initiative.

Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) president Oscar Kanjala and Sports Council executive secretary, George Jana, both with basketball background, were also in attendance.
