Britain celebrates European success

By Mabvuto Kambuwe:

A cross section of Malawians joined Britain in celebrating the success of English teams in European competitions on Saturday night.

Patrons were given a rare treat at the British High Commissioner’s residence in Lilongwe, where they watched the all-England Uefa Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs on big screens.

Liverpool won the continental title after beating Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid, Spain.

English teams also met in the Europa League final which saw Chelsea emerging champions after thrashing Arsenal 4-1 in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Wednesday night.

British acting High Commissioner to Malawi, Gary Leslie, said it was pleasing that English teams defied the odds to qualify for the finals of the two European club competitions.

“We organised the event to showcase the success of English football. The English Premier League is a global brand because people all over the world support it. Even in Malawi, people spend a lot of money on flying to the United Kingdom to watch their favourite teams,” Leslie said.

People, including diplomats and Football Association of Malawi Vice President James Mwenda graced the occasion.

National Youth Football Association Chairperson, Chimango Munthali, was also in attendance.

Mwenda said the performance of English teams had greatly improved in the 2018/19 season.

“It is a big achievement that teams from England have won the two European club competitions. It shows that the league has some of the best players in the world,” he said.

The two winning teams, Liverpool and Chelsea, will meet in the Uefa Super Cup to determine the ultimate ruler of European football.
