Promising bodybuilder, Brown Gondwe, made the most of defending champion, Henry Master’s absence to win Mr. Malawi Body-building title.

The contest was held at Mkango Lodge in Blantyre on Saturday and it attracted about 35 bodybuilders.

Master failed to defend the championship as he was reportedly on a business trip to South Africa.

Gondwe was selected because of his overall body mass and muscle definition, which made him stand out above the rest. Yasin ‘Ichocho’ Suwedi finished on second position while Emmanuel Mukuwa was third.

The champion received K300,000 with the runner-up pocketing K200,000. The third-placed bodybuilder got K100,000.

Gondwe, who has been rising steadily since winning the Mr. Mangochi Bodybuilding competition four years ago, has made huge strides.

“It has been months of preparations. It wasn’t easy. I had to be on a special diet. It requires discipline and hard work. I thank all those who have been supporting me, and I also thank the organisers for the wonderful show,” he said.

Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Association of Malawi (WBAM) general secretary, Harold Mwayang’ana, said they were impressed by the crop of the participants.

“The competition was stiff and we also saw some new faces, which gives us confidence that we will have better body-builders in the country,” he said.

WBAM staged the event with support from the government through Malawi National Council of Sports.

“We thank Sports Council for supporting us untiringly,” he said.
