Brown Mpinganjira, others join MCP

Veteran politicians Brown Mpinganjira, Friday Jumbe, Henry Phoya and Allan Chiyembekeza have joined governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The four were officially welcomed into the party yesterday at a ceremony that took place at MCP’s Southern Region headquarters in Blantyre.

The party also welcomed in its fold Frank Banda from Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Mpinganjira said he wants to help the party in addressing challenges that the country is experiencing.

“I have chosen to be part of the solution to challenges that the country is going through. If we continue political bickering, we will destroy this country; hence, the need to work together,” Mpinganjira said.

The former Mulanje Central Constituency lawmaker claimed he is not joining the party for selfish motives.

“When I dedicated my life to politics in the early 1990s, I did not say that I will serve for a particular period. My passion is to serve the people and that is what I will continue doing. People will always talk but I will not mind them,” he said.

Welcoming the members, MCP Second Deputy Secretary General, Gerald Kazembe, said this was a big plus to the party.

“The members will add on our achievements because their coming is good for the party since they have a huge following,” Kazembe said.

Mpinganjira and Chiyembekeza were physically welcomed at the ceremony while others were unveiled in absentia.

Mpinganjira, who was president of the now-defunct National Democratic Alliance, also served in the United Democratic Front, the People’s Party and, until recently, DPP where he was once its publicity secretary.

Chiyembekeza and Phoya also once served as Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Justice respectively while Jumbe served as Finance Minister in the UDF administration.
