BSC defend FMB Leslie Sevens tournament

BSC rugby team have defended the FMB Leslie Sevens championship after triumphing over Lilongwe Rugby Club in the final of the tournament played over the weekend at Blantyre Sports Club.

The defending champions faced a challenge in the final against the Lilongwe side in a fast and furious game with high intensity.

But BSC dominated the match only allowing James Cross, from Lilongwe Rugby Club to break the line once and score.

Led by Faffa Ratief, who was named most valuable player of the 2015 tournament, Nick Thorneycroft, Carl Henning and Magic Michael Fuller, the defending champions lifted the title once again with a final score of 24-5.

Africa Scottaspora beat Barbarians team 21-0 to win the Shield final.

In the Bowl final, old rivals Impala (Ndirande) played Red Ants (Luchenza).

Red Ants dominated Impala by 20-0 to win the Bowl final.

A mixed team of Lilongwe and Blantyre schoolboys called the Rebels put up a good fight against a very experienced Saints team named Na Na Batman.

Experience paid off with Na Na Batman victorious 22 -10.

“The pool matches were played in good spirits and we saw great running rugby,” said Graham Staines, the event organiser.

“Every year we see the skills improve and this is proof that rugby is becoming a major sport in Malawi.”

FMB, who have been the main sponsors of the event for four years, congratulated the players and the organisers for a successful event.

FMB marketing manager Widdey Nsona said the bank was proud to be associated with rugby foortball.

Nsona said they decided to continue sponsoring the event as one way of developing the sport in the country.

The Leslie Sevens is an annual seven-a-side rugby tournament held at Blantyre Sports Club, which was established in 1948 by W.J. Leslie.
