Thirteen police officers who were arrested in connection with the death of Buleya Lule will appear before the High Court for a hearing of bail application on July 28.

Spokesperson for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution Pilirani Masanjala confirmed the development and said this follows an application that the defence has made.

The suspects have been in custody at Maula and Dedza prisons for nine days now since they appeared before the Lilongwe Chief Resident Magistrates’ Court to be formally charged.

One of the defence lawyers, Lughano Mwabutwa, said the bail application will be heard in the court’s chambers.

“The issue of plea will come later once the date for trial is set. The accused are still on remand. When we appeared at the lower court, we said we intend to make the bail application sooner or later in the High court,” Mwabutwa said.

Lule was one of the suspects in a case of abduction in Dedza of Goodson Fanizo, a 14-year-old boy with albinism. Lule died in police custody.

A post-mortem report of his death indicated that he was electrocuted and assaulted with different types of instruments, including but not limited to a cylindrical object, inflicting injury to the head.

Twelve of the suspects are at Maula Prison while Evalista Mvula, a senior police officer, was transferred to Dedza Prison after the temporary closure of the female section at Maula Prison. The section was closed so that it could be used as an isolation centre in case anyone at the correctional facility contracted Covid-19.

Other female inmates were moved to other prisons.
