Bushiri joins Covid-19 fight

The Shepherd Bushiri Foundation (SBF) has announced a K50 million Covid-19 response intervention for Malawi.

SBF is South Africa-based Malawian preacher, Shepherd Bushiri’s humanitarian arm and has made the announcement at a time the number of cases in Malawi reached eight on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Health, which is chairing a Cabinet Committee on the Covid-19 pandemic in Malawi, also confirmed one Covid-19-related death in Blantyre.

And in a statement released Wednesday, SBF said through the intervention, it will be distributing free of charge several amenities to aid Malawians prevent the pandemic.

“Most importantly, the intervention will see SBF distributing, freely, several amenities aimed at preventing the spread of Covid-19 among disadvantaged communities,” the statement, signed by Bushiri’s spokesperson Ephraim Nyondo, says, adding that SBF will be distributing hand sanitisers, face masks, surgical gloves and water buckets.

It adds: “Some of the targeted beneficiaries will include prisons, rural health centers, minibus drivers, bicycle taxi operators and some media houses.”

Nyondo said later in an interview that the intervention is already in motion and that SBF would also like to partner with community-based organisations already working on Covid-19.

At least 1.4 million people have been infected by the pandemic globally with 212 countries and territories across the world confirming cases. Eighty-two thousand deaths have been recorded.

Over 290,000 others have recovered from the pandemic.
