Cabinet shakeup

Malawians should expect a new Cabinet within the next 24 hours, the State House (SH) has said.

SH Press Officer Brian Banda said this during the weekly media brief Monday.

He said President Lazarus Chakwera and his vice Saulos Chilima were reviewing ministers’ performance to inform their next move.

“President Chakwera announced that he would assess the performance of [members of] his Cabinet and name a new one in the first quarter of 2021. The first quarter is not over yet because we have two more days. President Chakwera is in the course of naming the new Cabinet and I can confidently say that he will name the Cabinet tomorrow or the other day,” Banda said.

Speaking at an earlier briefing, Banda said two vacant ministerial portfolios at the Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Local Government would be filled at that time but was quick to say the President was at liberty to fill them any time he wanted.

Commenting on the issue of mysterious guests that allegedly lodged at Crossroads Hotel on State House bill, Banda said they were yet to receive a report from the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on the same.

“Following the reports, President Chakwera asked ACB to investigate the matter and what we know is that the bureau has not come back to us with anything on the matter. You may wish to ask them on the status of their investigations,” he said.

ACB spokesperson Egritta Ndala asked for time to gather information.

Allegations were rife — with invoices flying around on social media — that State House had been paying Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe for accommodation of Israeli national Miguel Elias and three others from July 5 this year.

The Israelis, according to unverified reports, came into the country to train Chakwera’s security personnel in very Very Very Important Person protection.
