Can Aford be redeemed?

There is a calamitous demise of Alliance for Democracy (Aford) as a powerful Northern Region political force.

The inability to unite and collectively work towards unity is slowly but surely diminishing the party’s relevance to many.

Aford is now limping, though in the past it enjoyed massive support from many Malawians because of the bravery of the late Chakufwa Chihana who is credited for bringing plural politics to Malawi-a feared one party state then. The late Chihana’s courage gave Aford support from Malawians of all walks of life and posed the biggest challenge to the then ruling Malawi Congress Party.

Today, the party has all but squandered the people’s goodwill and ruptured into factions of Frank Mwenifumbo and Enock Chihana.

As laughable as it may seem, both factions have become mini-opposition formations that stubbornly hang on to the Aford name, and sadly only distinguish themselves by oddly using a leader’s name or surname as a feature to prove their difference.

The increasingly despondent and uninspired electorate is in dire need of political solutions to the issues affecting its daily life, the rot of corruption presided over by an uncaring ruling elite, and mounting poverty compounded by failing businesses that has forced many to close shop and leave the country in droves.

What relevance has Aford got when the electorate is uninspired and despondent? This is the same Aford which yesterday failed to hold the convention once again. It was deadlocked as we went to press.

The first conference failed two days ago after Chihana’s supporters got a court order to stop the one Mwenifumbo organised and paid for. Tuesday’s Chihana conference failed to take off because the two factions could not agree on delegates accusing each other of bringing fake ones. We wonder whether Aford can be redeemed especially when MCP, DPP and PP have made so many inroads in its Northern Region base and rendered Aford irrelevant. The question is: can Aford be redeemed?
