Car runs over player to death

Simama Premier Division teams will this weekend observe a minute of silence in honour of Ekwendeni United player Amos Mbunge who died after being hit by a car in Mzimba District.

Mbunge died on the spot after the accident near Trophor Farm on Wednesday evening when he was coming from the team’s training ground.

Ekwendeni Coach, Gerald Duwe, confirmed the player’s death, but could not give further details on the incident.

He, however, said the team was deeply shocked by their key defender’s passing.

Meanwhile, the Northern Region Football Association Vice Chairperson, Felix Msiska, has called on the teams to observe a minute of silence.

“It is really sad to learn about his death. In fact, their game against Lura FC, which was supposed to be played this weekend, has been postponed,” Msiska said.

Ekwendeni have started the season impressively, overcoming Luwinga United 1-0 and Lufita FC 2-1.

Rumphi Pirates lead the standings with seven points from three games.
