Carlsberg Cup re-launched
Carlsberg Malawi Limited Tuesday re-affirmed its commitment towards its national knock-out cup’s sponsorship.
The brewer’s Director of Marketing, Gwynyth Mchiela, re-launched this season’s edition of the cup at Football Association of Malawi’s (Fam) Mpira Village in Blantyre ahead of the June 10’s kick-off.
“The 2017 edition of the Carlsberg Cup is a significant property to the nation, the football fraternity and the company. Through this cup, we are giving back to the community that supports our company,” said Mchiela who was accompanied by Senior Brands Manager (alcoholics), Twikale Chirwa, and publicist Towela Munthali.
In response, Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, said they expect this year’s cup to unearth talent as was the case last season when the likes of Mangochi Police FC reached the semi-final. Mangochi eventually lost to eventual winners, Be Forward Wanderers.
“Fam is humbled by Carlsberg’s continued support to the cup. This is giving us hope that this year we will see more miracles in this cup. The cup will ensure that elite clubs have three major knock-out cups with Carlsberg being the mother of all them,” said Gunda speaking on behalf of Fam President, Walter Nyamilandu.
The cup, whose sponsorship is K40 million, will involve 48 regional Premier Division teams plus 16 from the Super League.
The regional teams will compete in the qualifiers to produce three finalists from the Northern Region, five from the Central Region and eight from the Southern Region. The regional finalists will join Super League sides for a national draw.
