Carlsberg Malawi Limited has reaffirmed its commitment to football in fashion after increasing sponsorship from K30 million to K40 million.
The company’s Senior Brands Manager, Twikale Chirwa, made the announcement yesterday at Mpira Village in Chiwembe, Blantyre as the cup enters its fifth year since its return.
Chirwa was accompanied by Marketing Director, Gwynth Mchiela and Company Secretary, Chipiliro Kauka, as Carlsberg extended its relationship with Football Association of Malawi (Fam) to another year.
“Carlsberg Cup remains a relevant platform that nurtures players from the grassroots to the elite league. We are looking at three competitive reasons for our continued support. We are looking at commercial reasons and also social enhancement of Malawi as well as football reasons,” Chirwa said in his speech.
“The footballing reasons standout as being very pertinent to football development in Malawi, but also in recruiting talent to the national team. It also gives teams the platforms to perform.”
Chirwa said they decided to extend the partnership by a year because it was easy to evaluate the developments that have happened within a particular period.
He also said that this year’s champions will pocket K12 million, up from K10 million.
Fam Executive Committee Member, Daud Mtanthiko, speaking on behalf of Fam President, Walter Nyamilandu, said they were excited with the development as some companies were either shunning sponsoring football or literally walking away from the sport.
“We are happy that Carlsberg has come back to sponsor the cup and that they have decided to increase the sponsorship by 33 percent. The amount is substantial.”
“If you recall in 2014, we had a Premier Division side, Zomba United, competing in the cup final against Nyasa Big Bullets. This shows that the competition puts all the teams on an equal footing,” he said.
Fam Competitions and Media Manager, Gomegzani Zakazaka, said registration has started and the competition will run from May to September.
Be Forward Wanderers are the defending champions having defeated Bullets 2-1 during last year’s final.
