Carlsberg unveils new product line

Carlsberg Malawi has commissioned a polyethylene terephthalate (Pet) line to produce beverages packaged in plastic bottles. The Pet line is worth K1.9 billion and has capacity to produce 6,000 bottles per hour.

“We can now offer diversity for consumers giving them the option of buying our soft drinks not only in glass bottles but also in plastic bottles. I am sure some of you have now seen carbonated soft drinks packaged in 500 millilitre and two litre plastic bottles,” Carlsberg Malawi Managing Director, Olivier Renson, said.

He was speaking during the commissioning of the line on Friday in Lilongwe.

Renson said the company aims to promote locally made products to add value to the country.

“However, we hope that our investment in this Pet line sends a message to other potential investors that there are changes in Malawi and that the economic environment, even with challenges, is a positive one,” Renson said.

According to Renson, Carlsberg is planning to invest a further K16 million before the end of the year.

“We believe that our future success depends on us building a presence with strong good quality brands that are proudly Malawian, not only for our country, but also for the international market, thus putting Malawi on the map,” he said.

Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Joseph Mwanamvekha, commended the company for promoting local products and assured them of government’s support.

“If you promote local products and create more jobs, we shall definitely support you,” Mwanamvekha said.

Carlsberg Malawi was bought by Groupe Castel last year. The Groupe Castel was founded in 1949 by Pierre Castel.
