In an effort to have 90 percent of people know their HIV status, Bangwe HIV and Aids Self Initiative (Bahasi) Community-based organisation held an HIV and Aids awareness campaign last Friday.

Speaking at Village Headman William’s ground in Traditional Authority (T/A) Machinjiri in Blantyre, Bahasi secretary, Matthews Likandawe, said the awareness campaign was based on triple 90.

“We want to help government’s efforts to have 90 percent of people know their HIV status, 90 percent to be on anti-retroviral therapy treatment and attain 90 percent in the reduction of stigma and discrimination against people living with the virus,” said Likandawe.

He added: “We take HIV related messages to the people and it’s high time people started abstaining from unsafe sex to prevent contracting HIV and Aids.”

The event was organised with assistance from Banja La Msogolo that offered HIV testing and counselling and family planning methods. There was also Umuthu Foundation that offered HIV testing and counselling apart from distributing condoms and encouraging people to go for voluntary male circumcision at hospitals.

National Aids Commission provided the funds for the awareness campaign through Blantyre City Council.
