BY EZELINA KAMALIZA
Central East African Railways (Cear) is constructing a container terminal yard in Limbe to increase cargo handling capacity.
This was said during a media interaction Cear organised on Friday in Blantyre to give an update on projects it is undertaking.
Cear Commercial Manager, Kondwani Mkonda, said currently, two terminals that are being used are inefficient.
Mkonda said the new terminal will be centralised to include fuel cargo and have an inflatable warehouse to store cargo as required.
“Currently, we are working on drainage works and full construction is expected to be completed by June 2020. The yard will have a capacity of holding 1200 20 ft containers and holding 50 wagons”, Mkonda said.

On safety and community engagement, Cear Community Engagement Manager, Towera Ng’ambi, said the company has trained 120 social monitors on the safety awareness.
Ng’ambi said the training has helped reducing accidents when trains pass through the communities.
Apart from these projects, Cear is also constructing the new shire bridge and enhancing the passenger train service.
