Celebrate responsibly—Peter Mutharika

By Jameson Chauluka:

President Peter Mutharika has asked his governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters to celebrate responsibly and avoid insulting their opponents in the aftermath of the May 21 Tripartite Elections.

Mutharika was speaking during a rally he addressed at Saint Augustine 3 Primary School Ground in Mangochi.

“In any competition, in any election, there can only be one winner. If you lose, learn to accept defeat gracefully and say maybe, next time. For us who won, let us not ridicule those who lost. They tried their best; maybe luck was not on their side. Maybe, next time they will win but the way things are I doubt it. In 2024 they will lose again,” he said. Mutharika’s speech was a departure from his remarks at his first victory rally on June 9 2019 at Njamba Freedom Park where he branded those who lost in the elections as crybabies.

“You should know that I will remain your president until 2024. Whether you voted for me or not, whether you like it or not, I will remain your president, so get used to it,” he said Sunday.

Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and UTM are challenging presidential election results in court, citing irregularities.

Malawi Electoral Commission declared Mutharika the winner of the presidential race despite the two opposition parties pressing an alarm over the irregularities.

MCP and People’s Party supporters have been holding sporadic protests against the results.
