By Sarah Chilora:

Centenary Bank Limited in partnership with the Bankers Association of Malawi (Bam) recently equipped students at Bwaila Secondary School in Lilongwe with knowledge on finance through a programme dubbed ‘60 Minutes with a Banker.’

Through the initiative, commercial banks and Bam are reaching out to secondary school students with knowledge on finance, savings and investment among other things.

The programme is implemented in a bid to foster financial literacy among secondary school students as part of the banking community’s contribution to the national financial inclusion agenda.

Centenary Bank Limited Marketing and Customer Experience Manager Linda Nkosi said investing in knowledge and understanding of students on financial matters is key towards attaining the ‘wealth creation for all’ aspiration as embedded in the Malawi 2063, the country’s long-term development plan.

“The event’s overarching goal was to empower young individuals, bringing them into the financial spectrum and encouraging them to work hard and save money with banks,” Nkosi said.

She said by understanding the pivotal role commercial banks play in the chain, the students were inspired to envision a future in which they can actively participate in Malawi’s financial landscape.

One of the teachers at the school, Dingire Ngwira commended Bam and the bank for the initiative.

“The presentation delivered by Centenary Bank was engaging and enlightening and has surely left a lasting impact on the students motivating them to work hard, save wisely and embrace opportunities presented by banks in Malawi,” she said.
