Central High hosts handball

Central High School has organised a handball invitational tournament to be held at the Blantyre institution on Saturday to groom youngsters.

Over s ix schools and community teams will take part in the day-long tournament, Malawi Handball Association (Maha) Treasurer, Sophie Kathewera, has confirmed.

Bedir, Ndirande Police and Limbe are some of the schools that will feature, while Cobbe Barracks junior side and Chigumula Stars are some of the community teams set to take part in the event.

To spice up the tournament, Central High has also invited senior teams, including Cobbe Barracks and Blackpool, to feature during an exhibition match.

Kathewera said the tournament was timely as the association was identifying Under-20 players to feature for the girls’ and boys’ national teams’ during an international tournament in South Africa in September.

“Currently, Maha and its regional affiliates are also running some friendly games in the Central and Northern regions to identify promising talent. So, the tournament, which Central High has organised, is handy on our part because we will use it to scout for talent,” she said.

Kathewera said promising players would be called for special training to assess whether they can play for the junior national teams.

“Members of the technical panel would be available to monitor the developments and outstanding young players would be invited for national team trials,” she said.

Kathewera said the inclusion of senior teams would help youngsters to learn some tricks.

Handball is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outfield players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins.
