Central Region Chess League has secured sponsorship from Muleso and Mphande worth K400,000 to stage a rapid tournament next month.

The rapid tournament is set to run from July 4 to 6 at Simama Hotel in Lilongwe.

Renowned chess figure Mayeso Mphande and South Africa-based business consultant, Francis Muleso, have partnered to spearhead chess revival in Central Region.

CRCL chairperson, Khama Chindole, said they were happy that the league had secured sponsorship.

“As a league, we are happy that we have secured this ground-breaking sponsorship. We shall use the sponsorship money wisely to the last penny,” Chindole said.

The Muleso and Mphande Rapid tournament is likely to revive the CRCL glory days of 2006 when the league enjoyed sponsorship from Dilawo Contractors and Cifu Group.

Mphande said together with business consultant Muleso, they wanted to help in the development of the mental sport among the youth.

“We want the youth to embrace the mental sport as it will help them make sound decisions, develop patience and discipline,” he said.

Mphande, who is also a Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) executive member, said he has reasonably sound knowledge on the chess subject and has contested neck–to–neck with some of Malawi top players both at college level and regional tournaments.

“I used to coach the now celebrated Petros ‘Razorblade’ Mfune at Chancellor College,” he said.

Last year, Mphande was a lone sponsor of the K100,000 Mayeso Mphande Rapid chess which was won by journalist Leonard Sharra.

Meanwhile, CRCL general secretary, Eddie Kulesi, has hinted that the tournament would be Fide-rated and other logistics concerning the tournament will be communicated in due course.
