Chakwera tips ZCC on self-reliance

President Lazarus Chakwera has urged Zomba City Council (ZCC) duty bearers to come up with sound economic strategies.

Chakwera made the call yesterday when he engaged ZCC representatives during a presidential conference on councils held at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre.

“Zomba City used to be one of the best cities in Malawi and, because of its history, the council should find means of economically developing other than relying on funds from the Central Government,’’ he said.

Chakwera said his administration would not shield officials implicated in corrupt practices, adding the vice was negatively affecting the implementation of national development initiatives.

However, the President pledged to look into the issue of boundary expansion as raised by council officials. ZCC Mayor Benson Bulla said they had plans to expand the city’s boundary so that it could accommodate industrial sites and other planned structures.

“Our plans, as Zomba City Council, seem to be the same as those of the President. That is why I raised the issue of boundary. We have limited space, so much so that, if we were to establish an industrial site, it would be impossible to do so. I am sure that, after the meeting with the President, our concerns will be looked into,’’ Bulla said.

ZCC has a population of 105,000 residents, with 10 councillors and a member of Parliament.

The meeting Chakwera had with ZCC was the fourth after he met with council representatives from Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre.
