Christian Health Association of Malawi (Cham) medical personnel are yet to receive their salaries for the month of July. The delay in salaries has affected the medical workforce working in Cham hospitals throughout the country.
A nurse working in one of the Cham hospitals but opted for anonymity stated: “we have not received our July salaries. This is making our lives very hard as the majority of us solely depend on our monthly salaries and we are bread winners in our households. We have not been given reasons why our salaries have been delayed.”
Ministry of Health spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe he said as of Monday, funds had been sent to the Cham secretariat.
“Government does not directly disperse salaries to Cham health workers. It is the Cham Secretariat that distributes the salaries,” Chikumbe said.
He, however, said that the delay was because the ministry received the money late from Treasury.
Ministry of Finance spokesperson Nations Msowoya only said “the Ministry of Health is best placed to comment on this matter”.
Cham Executive Director Dr. Mwai Makoka confirmed that the workers started getting their salaries on Monday.
Cham medical workforce makes up 37 percent of health workers in the country and 90 percent are based in the rural areas where they cater for patients who fail to get health services from government hospitals.
