Chancellor College student laid to rest

The body of a Chancellor College student, who died in a car crash Thursday morning, was laid to rest at her home in Ntcheu district while that of her colleague is at College of Medicine mortuary in Blantyre awaiting family arrangements.

A Toyota Corolla carrying nine people overturned near Theological College in Zomba killing 19 year-old Pilirani Chonde on the spot while 20 year-old Anthony Kambauwa died at Zomba General Hospital.

Zomba Police spokesperson Patricia Sopriano said the accident happened around 3am when driver of the vehicle lost control, forcing it to roll several times.

“Mr Steve Silo was driving from Zomba, Luwangwa towards Chanco [Chancellor College]. When he approached Theological College, he lost control of the vehicle and it overturned several times. Chonde was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital while Kambauwa died hours later. The other passengers are still receiving treatment at the Hospital,” said Sopriano.

Communication from Chancellor College Registrar Mary Wasili shows that Chonde was a first year Bachelor of Arts Humanities (BAH) student while Kambauwa was a second year student studying towards a Bachelor of Social Science degree.

According to Sopriano, the other students included Winnie Ndovi, Dingiswayo Moyo and Mirriam Nyirongo.
