Chanco, St Andrews sign MoU

St Andrews International High School has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chancellor College (Chanco) of the University of Malawi, which will see students who complete Bachelor of Arts in Education studies getting first-hand experience.

Speaking during the MoU signing ceremony in Zomba on Tuesday, St Andrew’s Head teacher, Kieron Smith, said they have decided to formalise the process so that they can be able to deal with the institution and not individual students.

“This will offer graduating students a chance to put into practice what they learn in school in a supportive environment. It means that the teacher-students will have a second teaching experience at our school with the idea that, if there are vacancies, we can be able to employ them. Even without that, they will be equipped to get teaching jobs in local schools,” Smith said.

Smith said the opportunity will open up to best performing students, with the first set of students set to be taken in September this year.

Chanco Dean of Education, Symon Chiziwa, described the agreement as significant.

“This partnership is quite significant because the trainee-teachers will be inducted in a culture of teaching, receive mentorship and also get exposure to new teaching methodologies that are used at international level. This will enable them to grow in the teaching profession,” Chiziwa said.
