Chanco students petition Peter Mutharika

Chancellor College students Thursday petitioned President Peter Mutharika, who is the chancellor of the University of Malawi (Unima), to intervene and end the industrial dispute between their lecturers and Unima Council.

The college was supposed to open on March 20 but the arrangement failed after the academic staff at the institution withdrew their labour over salary disparities among employees of similar grades in Unima’s four constituent colleges.

The students delivered the petition through Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Zomba city councils.

In the capital city, the students marched from Area 18 roundabout to Capital Hotel roundabout and finished the walk with the presentation of the petition to the Acting Director of Administration Stallichi Mwambiwa at the civic offices.

Mwambiwa said the petition would be delivered to the intended recipient.

“We strongly believe that your intervention in the matter is now more than just necessary if the dispute is to end anytime soon. We also request your office to help put in place mechanisms for maintaining smooth academic calendars for colleges so that all the consequences that come with frequent unwanted closures of colleges can be avoided,” the petition reads in part.

Students Union of Chancellor College (Succ) president Sylvester James warned that if Mutharika does not act on the matter soon, they would be demonstrating every Thursday and will proceed to have people sign an online petition which will be sent to relevant international organisations.

Chanco students went for an end of year recess in December last year.
