Chanco summons students’ leader

Chancellor College administration has summoned the Students Union of Chancellor College (Succ) General Secretary, Edward Chilenje, to a disciplinary hearing over the students’ demonstrations at the height of the university fees impasse.

In a letter addressed to Chilenje dated August 16, 2016, which The Daily Times has seen, the hearing will take place on Monday, August 22.

The letter alleges that Chilenje in his capacity as the Students’ General Secretary disobeyed the college administration by going ahead and organise a General Assembly which authorities had objected to.

“During the hearing, you will be expected to answer to alleged misconduct and behaviour which brought the university in disrepute, discredited the good name, and prejudiced the peace, good order and good governance,” reads the letter in part.

Chilenje confirmed receipt of the letter and charges levelled against him but said he was innocent.

“I am not guilty. I am not guilty. The general assembly is a forum where all Chancellor College students meet to discuss their problems. We did everything as Chancellor College students together,” he said.

University students across the country protested against the fees hike which they said would deter deserving but poor students from attaining higher education.

Several students were arrested during the demonstrations which were marred by violence and damage to property, forcing the college administration to close the school indefinitely
