Changalume Barracks hold sports bonanza

Malawi Defence Force’s Changalume Barracks hosted a week-long inter-company sports festival that concluded on Friday with winners basking in the glory of assorted prizes.

A-Company emerged overall winners in the competition of multiple sports disciplines that included football, volleyball, basketball, tug of war, and athletics.

“I am excited with the outcome of the sports festival, more so because it has achieved its objectives. The aim of this competition was largely to prepare our soldiers for various competitions, such as those at Brigade level and also the entire MDF level,” said Major Raphael Mbobo Phiri, Second in Command of the Barracks.

Phiri said he was optimistic that the event had ignited a continued good relationship between the Barracks and the corporate world.

Some of the sponsors were Medical Aid Society of Malawi (Masm), Airtel, Standard Bank, Chibuku Products, Carlsberg and the MDF itself.

“What the sponsors have done is very commendable, especially considering the hard economic times we are in. We do not take that for granted, and it is our hope that they will continue assisting us to mould athletes and sportsmen within the Malawi Defence Force, especially our Barracks,” Mbobo Phiri added.

Airtel representative, Chrispin Kamuikeni, said they were equally excited that the competition had achieved its objective.

Overall winner of the event was A-Company, followed by C-Company, taking home a floating trophy and assorted prizes, including cash.

Chair of the organising committee, Lieutenant, Cuthbert Kalipinde, said it was exciting that this year’s competition attracted good sponsorship from the corporate world.

“We hope you will continue assisting us and that our partnership will continue,” he said.

Masm contributed over K800, 000 towards the event while Airtel provided K500, 000.
