Malawi national football team centre back Charles Petro could become a champion in his first season in Europe as his Moldovan side FK Sheriff Tiraspol needs just three wins to lift the Divizia Națională title.
Sheriff increased their title chances with a 2-0 beating of FC Sfintul Gheorghe Wednesday to go seven points clear at the summit of the Moldovan top flight league with 52 points from 19 matches.
Second-placed Petrocub have 45 points from the same number of matches.
Sheriff will take their tally to 61 points if they win the three matches while Petrocub will amass 60 points should they collect maximum points from the remaining four matches.
Petro featured in the match and said he was itching for success in his debut season after helping Nyasa Big Bullets lift the league title last year.
With four matches remaining to wind up the season, Petro said they were working hard to lift the title.
“I am happy that I helped my club to win. We need to win at least three matches from the five matches remaining so that we can be champions. So we are not taking it easy. There is more work to be done,” Petro said.
Should Petro win the title in Moldova, he will follow in the footsteps of former Flames, Orlando Pirates and Be Forward Wanderers star Joseph Kamwendo, and former Malawi and Silver Strikers left attacker Frank Banda.
