Flames blossoming defender Charles Petro has been voted as Sheriff Tiraspol Player of the Month for August after solid performance in the Uefa Champions League and Moldovan National Division.
The club conducted a survey through its social media platforms and the Malawian defender got more votes to scoop the award.
“As a result of the survey conducted among fans on our official media pages (Vkontakte, Facebook, Instagram), the best player in August is the defender of FC Sheriff- Charles. In the second place, the striker Frank Castaneda, on the third goalkeeper Dmitry Chelyadnik. Thanks to the fans for the activity. Congratulations to Charles on the title,” the club posted on its pages.
However, Petro was not readily available for his comment Sunday.
His agent Chamunonda Musanhu was excited with Petro’s exploits in his debut season.
“He is settling very well. He has got stamina and talent. The player has potential to become one of the best players in Africa,” he said.
In August, Petro scored his first goal for the club when he came off the bench in a 4-1 victory over Petrocub in the league. Sheriff are top of the table with 24 points from eight games.
Flames coach Meck Mwase also heaped praise on the youngster.
“I am happy that he is working hard. It is good news for us as we want to have all players fit ahead of Afcon games in November,” he said.
Petro will likely feature for the Flames in back-to-back Afcon qualifiers against Burkina Faso in November this year.
Petro made history by becoming the second Malawian player to play in the Uefa Champions League after Essau Kanyenda. But his team exited the competition in second round after losing 2-1 to Qarabag Agdam of Azerbaijan. In the first round, Sheriff beat Luxembourg 2-0.
The former Nyasa Big Bullets star signed a three-year contract with Sheriff in February this year after impressing in his debut season in the Super League following his promotion from the Reserve side. Last season Petro was named best defender in the top flight league as Bullets defended the title.
