Malawi National Football Team defender Charles Petro and attacker Peter Banda’s dreams of winning a double in Moldova suffered a big blow as their side Sheriff Tiraspol lost 3-2 on post-match penalties against Sfintiful Gheorghe in the Moldovan Cup on Sunday.
The development comes barely a week after the former Nyasa Big Bullets duo won the 2020/21 Moldovan National Division title with Sheriff.
However, at Zimbru Stadium, Sheriff failed to break the deadlock despite creating several chances.
The match went into extra time after it ended goalless in regulation time. Extra time also failed to produce a winner, forcing the teams to go into penalty shootouts.
During the shootout, Sheriff only converted two penalties while Gheorghe converted three.
Petro said while the cup loss was heartbreaking, he remains relieved that Sheriff will feature in the Uefa Champions League playoffs.
“It is unfortunate that we lost the final. We did our best to win the match but penalties are unpredictable. The good thing is that we have won the league and we are very proud of that.
“We are done with the 2020/21 season and we will be returning home this week. After that, we will be back to start preparing for the forth-coming season,” Petro said.
Petro is part of the Flames squad that coach Meck Mwase has called into camp for the friendly against Tanzania on June 13.
