Malawi National Football Team stars Charles Petro and Peter Banda are on the verge of advancing to the second round of the Uefa Champions League preliminary round after their Moldovan side FC Sheriff Tiraspol beat Teuta Duress of Albania 4-0 at Niko Davanna Stadium on Wednesday night.

Petro went in as a second half substitute, replacing Sebastien Thill in the 58th minute, while Banda was not featured.

Sheriff took the lead in the 14th minute through Henrique Luvannor before doubling the lead on the dot of half time.

Adama Traore scored the third goal for the Moldovan Champions before Frank Castaneda scored the final goal with a minute to full time.

Petro expressed satisfaction with the wide margin win.

“Winning away is important as we will not be under pressure when playing the return match at home. All what we wanted was a win.

“This time around, we will do our best to go as far as the third round. This will give us the chance to qualify for the group stages of the competition,” Petro said.

Last year in September, Sheriff were booted out of qualification in the second round after losing 2-1 to Azerbaijan side Qarabag Agdam.

Petro joined Sheriff in January last year while Banda joined the club in March this year.
