Malawi National Football Team defender Charles Petro and attacker Peter Banda have progressed to the second round of the Uefa Champions League preliminary round after their Moldovan side Sheriff FC beat Albanian side Teuta Duress 1-0.

The return match was played at Bolshaya Spartivnaya Arena on Tuesday night.

Sheriff progressed on 5-0 aggregate, having won 4-0 away in Albania at Niko Davanna Stadium last week.

Petro was an unused substitute during the return game having played as a second half substitute in the first leg whereas Banda was on the bench during the first leg but replaced Nadrey Dago in the 60th minute in the return leg.

Banda said he was happy to feature for Sheriff in a Uefa Champions League match, vowing to help his club progress to the third round of the competition.

“I am happy that we have reached another round. This is a big tournament and I am glad that I have played in a Champions League game. All I am looking forward to is to help my club win matches,” Banda said.

Last year in September Sheriff lost 2-1 to Azerbaijan side Qarabag Agdam in the qualifying second round campaign to be booted out of the competition.

Petro joined Sheriff in January last year while Banda joined the club in March this year.
