Chawanangwa Kawonga back at Chibuto FC

Former Silver Strikers forward Chawananga Kawonga is today expected to establish if he will extend his contract with Mozambique top league side, Chibuto FC.

After snubbing several offers from clubs such as Silver and Mbeya City FC of Tanzania, the former Malawi Under-20 National Football Team striker returned to Mozambique over the weekend.

“I expect to meet management on Monday [today] to hear what they have to offer me. I had an offer from Silver but it was on the lower side. My father, who is also my adviser, also felt that it would not be in the interest of my career joining Mbeya,” Kawonga said in a telephone interview on Saturday.

“One of the reasons I am hoping for an extension of the contract is the prospect of me playing in Portugal. Chibuto have, once again, hinted that they can send me to their sister side in Portugal.”

Kawonga, who was also linked with a move to Nyasa Big Bullets, is a quality forward with blistering pace on the turn, can take on defenders and makes wise `runs. However, his first touch and finishing can, with coaching, get better.

He was part of the Under-20 team that, in 2014, was two games away from qualifying for the finals of the Africa Youth Championship.

Last season’s TNM Super League top scorer Richard Mbulu has also signed for Costa do Sol after being promised a move to a Portuguese side next season.
