Chawanangwa Kawonga declines Kinnah Phiri’s offer
Former Silver Strikers’ forward, Chawanangwa Kawonga, has reportedly chickened out on a possible move to Mbeya City FC of the Tanzania Premier League.
Mbeya’s Malawian Coach, Kinnah Phiri, confirmed on Saturday that Kawonga asked for more time to consult on the offer from the Tanzanian side.
“I wanted him for trials but it seems he is busy sorting out a few things, hence I will not travel with him to Tanzania [yesterday] as arranged,” the former Flames’ mentorb said.
“The other strikers are from Uganda and Zambia so I needed, at least, a striker from Malawi. The other guys Sankhani Mkandawire and Owen Chaima are doing well.”
Kawonga was not readily available for a comment, but he last week, told The Daily Times that he was waiting for word from his bosses at his former Mozambican club, Chibuto FC. His contract with Chibuto expired.
Last week, Silver interim General Secretary, Thabo Nyirenda, told The Daily Times that while the Bankers were hoping for a re-union with Kawonga, he was unlikely to feature for them this season as Chibuto are yet to clear him.
The former Malawi Under-20 National Football Team forward was also linked with a move to Nyasa Big Bullets.
Kawonga has some four caps.
While undoubtedly talented, Kawonga is still a rough diamond that needs polishing, especially his first touch and finishing. His strength is positioning, speed on the turn and dribbling.
