Former Silver Strikers forward , scored a hat-trick as Costa do Sol thrashed Maxaquene 3-1 at National Stadium of Zimpeto in Maputo on Sunday to qualify for the final of the Mozambique Cup.
Costa qualified for the final 4-2 on aggregate, having won the semi-final first-leg 2-1 two weeks ago, with Kawonga scoring once, according to Mozambique’s Verdade newspaper. The team’s opponents in the final are Ferroviaro de Beira.
Featuring in attack alongside fellow countrymen Matthews Sibale and Richard Mbulu, Kawonga scored in the 15th, 22nd and 37th minutes to take his tally to five goals in the cup.
In an interview yesterday, Kawonga said: “This is one of my best seasons in Mozambique. I guess it is all because I am playing for a big team with quality players. I played on the left wing with Sibale upfront alongside a Mozambican striker whereas Mbulu came off the bench.”
In another semi-final second leg, Beira saw off Liga Desportivo 3-1.
In the league, Kawonga, who is not part of the Flames’ latest squad, has scored eight goals.
He is at par with compatriot Sibale, also a former Silver goalpoacher. Costa are coached by Horacio Gonçalves.
