PUGILIST Salimu Chazama was declared winner of a 12-round title bout over Chrispin Moliati to become the lightweight champion amid a chorus of boos from a huge turnout at Lilongwe Community Centre Ground on Sunday.

He won the bout on a split points’ decision.

It was a tight affair as both boxers came with a purpose and showed their hunger for a victory from first round.

Enjoying good support from the crowd, Moliati started well but he lost his energy towards the last three rounds.

Chazama was aggressive with the intention of knocking down his opponent, but Moliati was clever as he used his tricks of hit and duck.

On the other hand, most of Chazama’s powerful punches were off target, whereas Moliati’s punches were on target.

The three judges scored 119 for Chazama, 118 for Moliati, second judge scored vice versa in favour of Moliati whereas the third judge handed the contest to Chazama with 117 and 115.

However, the majority of the crowd thought the bout was a draw.

In his victory speech, Chazama was delighted, but admitted that Moliati gave him a good fight. Moliati refused to speak to journalists after the loss.

In the main supporting bout, Kudakwache Banda defeated Chikondi Makawa in semi-professional bout through retirement. In other bouts, Robert Kachiza won against Alexander Likande.

Romeo Chikwakwa won against Chisomo Sinsamala, whereas Rhihno Yudah knocked out Gift Phiri in round number two.

Speaking after watching the fight, Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board chairperson, Lonzoe Zimba, said the contest was tight.

“It was not easy for the judges to declare the winner. Both boxers did well, Moliati dominated from round one to seven while Chazama was very aggressive towards the end of the bout,” Zimba said.

New Dawn Boxing Promotions director, Mike Chimaliza, was impressed with the huge turn-out and pledged to continue organising more bouts.
