‘Chelsea’ supporters donate to Senti

A group of over 150 supporters of English Premier League giants Chelsea Football Club in Malawi, on Saturday, went out of fear to cheer the underprivileged communities and donated assorted items to Senti area in Lilongwe.

A total of 52 families benefited from the donation valued at K200,000 which was a contribution from the Chelsea fans on WhatsApp group.

The items included maize flour, cooking oil and soap. Each family received food pack containing five kilograms of maize flour, 500ml cooking oil, 1Kg sugar and salt, 400 grams of soya pieces and two tablets of soap.

Representative of the grouping, Thom Khanje said the donation was to help the families cope with Covid-19 restrictions that have negatively dampened small scale business among low income communities in the country.

“We may not be many in Malawi but we thought we can in our small way, do something to help the less privileged. Apart from cheering our team, we believe we can make a change in our communities especially reaching out to the needy,” Khanje said.

Speaking after receiving the items, Group Village headman Senti hailed the fans for the timely donation.

“I am extremely happy with the gesture shown by Chelsea fans. They have proved that they have the spirit of sharing even in tough times. We appeal to other supporters and well-wishers to assist us with other essential materials,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Patience Mwale also commended the Chelsea supporters saying the items would ease challenges her family faces.
