Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) has announced the cancellation of the Zone 4.3 Under-16 tournament which was scheduled for December 15 to 23.
Chessam Publicity Secretary, Alfred Chimthere, said the body made the cancellation in consultation with the African Chess Confederation (ACC) board due to circumstances beyond the control of the two bodies.
Although Chessam was not forthcoming on the reasons that led to the cancellation, sources indicated lack of funding as the major factor.
“Chessam regrets the inconvenience caused to all stakeholders involved in the build-up,” reads part of a statement released on Saturday and signed by Chimthere.
Chessam has instead planned a national tournament from December 21 to 23 in Lilongwe at a venue to be announced soon.
“The tournament will have five categories as follows: Open section— 1,800 elo rating and above; Section B—below 1,800 elo rating; ladies section; under 18 boys and girls sections as well as under 14 boys and girls sections,” Chimthere said.
He said details on registration processes and prize funding for the tournament would be announced by December 1.
In another development, Chessam is sending five junior chess players to Limpopo, South Africa, to participate in an individual tournament for African schools scheduled for December 5-14.
“Some players will also be considered to compete at an African amateur tournament from December 30 to January 7 in Namibia,” Chimthere said.
