Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) has named a 15-member squad to compete in the first ever Zone 4.5 online tournament to run from October 9 to 18.
Well known players such as Candidate Masters, Chiletso Chipanga and Petros Mfune are in the squad.
Chessam Publicity Secretary Alfred Chimthere said they held an online national qualifying tournament on Sunday to select outstanding players to represent the country in an international tournament.
“We will arrange sparring matches against other top local players. They will have a group to share notes/books and chess concepts,” he said.
Chimthere also revealed plans to engage an International Master to hold an online session with the team.
He was optimistic that the squad would impress in the tournament that would attract Zone 4.5 countries drawn from within Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) region.
Fishern Mwagomba, George Mwale will join Chipanga and Mwale in open section whereas Woman Fide Master Linda Chaononga, Tamara Kaliwo, Tapiwa Banda and Madalitso Khanyera will represent the country in ladies section.
Three players Praise Kalambo, Brian Trapence and Tupochere Mlanjira are in the boys under-20 category while the girls category has Caroline Trapence, Charity Tadeyo and Rachael Jyloss (nominated).
