Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) has said it will stage online tournaments dubbed blitz starting this month end. Chessam Publicity Secretary, Alfred Chimthere, said the move is aimed at keeping chess players active during Covid-19 pandemic period.
“Before coronavirus struck we had made very good progress on various events on our calendar. We were hoping for a competitive season to keep our players active and in shape ahead of international events,” he said.
Chimthere said Chessam has settled for online tournament and will use sponsorship from Mybucks Bank. “The first Blitz challenge will take place on Sunday [April 26] and we will be holding a monthly tournament thereafter. We have a system in place to ensure the success of the tournament,” he said.
Chimthere said players will battle in three categories; open, ladies and juniors. “The entry fee is pegged at K1000 for open and ladies sections, while junior section is at K500,” he said.
Chessam will also dish out prizes with open and ladies section champions pocketing K25,000 each whereas runners-up will get K20,000. Third placed individual will receive K15,000 while the fourth-placed player will each collect K10,000.
Players on positions five to 10 will get a consolation prize of K5,000 each. In junior category, the champion will receive K15,000 with the runners up, third-placed and fourth-placed individuals pocketing K10,000, K7,500 and K5,000 respectively.

The tourneys are scheduled for 18:00 – 20:00 hours for the Open section. The ladies and juniors section will be at 18:00 – 19:00 hours on the specified dates,” he said.
