Chess Association of Malawi (Chessam) has coughed K900, 000 to enable the three regional committees to hold Easter Open tournaments.
Chessam Publicity Secretary, Alfred Chimthere, said each regional committee would be allocated K300,000 to stage the event.
“Chessam is pleased to inform the chess fraternity that it has bankrolled the three regional leagues to undertake an Easter open tournament in respective leagues. Chessam has taken responsibility in ensuring the Easter open tourneys are rated. However, the leagues will champion the ground work so that the tournaments are successfully hosted,” he said.
Following the development, Chessam has maintained its tradition of having tournaments during Easter period.
Meanwhile, Chessam President, Susan Namangale, has appointed a panel of judges to select the best logo among the entries.
Chessam recently announced its plans to improve its logo.
Namangale has appointed Mayeso Mphande as chairperson with Francis Kadzula (NRCL), Peter Jailosi (SRCL), Ernest Matola (CRCL and ICT adviser), Daisy Nkhoma (CRCL and Ladies representative) and Chimthere as members.
“The task team starts work immediately and will have a time of seven days to choose the best logo and advise Chessam. The best logo winner will walk away with K20,000 and a chessboard, as it was announced on the advert. The new logo could be unveiled at the prize-giving ceremony on one of the league tournaments,” he said.
